Communicating with the Opposite Sex

The ideas in this section are generalizations about groups of people, in this case men and women. Generalizations are only expected to be true in "most" cases, not all, and they usually have exceptions. Think about your own experiences of communicating with the opposite sex. Do you think that the conclusions about the way men and women communicate match up with your experiences? If so, in what way? If not, what are the exceptions? Do you feel that you fit the profile described for your gender? Having thought about these issues, respond to the following questions in your Thinking Notebook.
  • Think about the difficulties you have had in communicating with the opposite sex. Do you discern any patterns to these problems that reflect the ideas in this section?
  • Devise strategies for dealing with the communication problems you have encountered in the past with the opposite sex. You might adapt strategies from The Thinker's Way, or create your own. Since these miscommunications occur in social as well as business or work relationships, it's important to be aware of them and to implement your knowledge of this at work as well.

Describe strategies you have used successfully in communicating with the opposite sex. Share your ideas so that they can help others by being posted on the Thinking in Your World MESSAGE BOARD.
