Procrastination

"Don’t do today what you can put off until tomorrow."
"In putting off what one has to do, one runs the risk of never being able to do it."
-Charles Baudelaire
"Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week."
-Spanish Proverb
"Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task."
-William James

"I am a procrastinator. Whenever I have something important to do, especially if it’s difficult or unpleasant, I tend to put it off and instead work on more trivial things. It doesn’t matter how much time I allow for certain responsibilities, I always end up waiting till the last minute to really focus and get things done, or I overschedule too many things into the time available. I usually meet my deadlines, but not always, and I don’t enjoy working under this kind of pressure. In many cases I know that I’m not producing my best work. To make matters worse, the feeling that I’m always behind is causing me to feel really stressed out and undermining my confidence. I’ve tried every kind of schedule and technique, but my best intentions simply don’t last, and I end up slipping into my old habits. I want to solve this problem so that I can lead a well-balanced and happier life." making it last

Procrastination!! What an unwanted presence in the lives of so many people! When I ask groups of people how many have at least some difficulty with procrastination, the response is invariably wry laughs, sheepish grins, and uplifted hands from the overwhelming majority of people. Why is this such a problem and what can we do to overcome it? The answers to these questions are more complex than many people think.
Why do you believe that procrastination is a serious problem for so many people? What approaches do you believe are most productive in solving it?
